Anti Amebics

Anti Amebics

Antiamebic agents, also known as Amebicides, are a class of medications that treat Amebiasis. This protozoan-borne parasitic disease can affect the intestines and other parts of the body.

What is Amebiasis

Entamoeba Histolytica, a parasite in the intestines, causes Amebiasis. The parasite is an amoeba, an organism with only one cell. People can get this parasite if they eat or drink something contaminated with the amoeba....

Amebiasis symptoms usually include an amebic infection, ulcers, and amebic pus in the liver. Therefore, the condition eventually causes the disease to spread. Infections can spread when people don't wash or sanitize their hands after going to the bathroom.

The infected hands can transmit parasites through food and surfaces that come in contact with them.

Symptoms of Amebiasis

In many situations, the Amebiasis-causing parasite resides in the large intestine without generating symptoms. On occasion, it causes:

  • Diarrhea (which may be bloody)
  • Fever
  • Abdominal pain
  • Appetite loss
  • Nausea

It can spread to the liver, lungs, and brain in rare instances.

How do Antiamebics work

Amebicides eliminate amebic infections in the intestines and outside by killing trophozoites (invasive parasite stage). However, they do not remove cysts (infectious stage of the parasite).

Amebicides spread to all body tissues and fluids, like milk, saliva, and cerebrospinal fluid. The liver breaks them down and eliminates harmful substances during excretion.

Types of Antiamebics

Based on the location of the action, Antiamebic medications are divided into two groups in three parasite-infested regions.

Tissue Amebicides

They kill tissue-invading amoebae. These enter the bloodstream quickly and travel to the infection. The intestine absorbs them quickly.

One of the most effective tissue amebicides is Secnidazole, sold under the brand, Seczol.

Luminal Amebicides

They treat infections in the lumen of the intestines. This type of infection is asymptomatic, but it is important to treat it before it spreads to other parts of the body.

The most well-known luminal Amebicide is Chloroquine Phosphate, sold under the brand Lariago.

Side effects of Antiamebics

Common side effects are:

  • Headache
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Heartburn

Mild effects may last a few days or weeks. If they're severe or persistent, see your doctor or pharmacist.
