4 Things You Can Do To Help Your Child Overcome Anxiety

Anxiety disorders are extremely common among people these days, not only among adults but also among children. Yes!! Research suggests that children too experience anxiety attacks and we can’t even think of its impact on the psychological health of a child.

Anxiety disorders are extremely common among people these days. Everytime we search for the total number of cases of anxiety, it is likely to be more in numbers. There is no doubt to say that it is an extremely serious disorder which not only affects adults but children as well. The proportion of diagnosed cases of anxiety in children are quite high in number.

Anxiety is basically a disorder which is characterized by persistent or irrational worry or fear that interferes with the daily activities of an individual. Anxiety attacks emotionally attack a sufferer. Problems with eating, sleeping disorder, and irritated behavior are the most common symptoms in people who suffer from anxiety. Panic attacks are defined as a sudden onset of intense fear and discomfort that reaches its point in a minute and is accompanied by at least three to four of the following symptoms:

  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Fear of losing control or dying
  • Chest pain
  • Heat sensation
  • Abdominal irritation
  • Trembling
  • Nausea

When a child suffers from anxiety disorder it prevents a child from knowing people or from making friends. It also prevents a child from taking part in any extra activities in the school. Research has suggested that if an anxiety disorder in a child is left untreated, it can have a significant impact on his or her future. It not only affects the overall academic performance in a child, but it could affect the overall health, especially cognitive system.

1.Breathing exercise

Multiple studies have stated that breathing exercises are one of the best ways to reduce the effects of anxiety on an individual. Breathing exercises are strongly associated with the mind of a person and help to calm it down.

Calm breathing is an effective technique which helps to slow down breathing when feeling anxious or stressed. Breathing exercises can significantly help your child to feel better and less stressed. Remember to accompany your child whenever you ask him or her to practice breathing exercises. Also, ensures that you two are free from any distractions.

How to do calm breathing?

It is easy. Take a slow breath using your nose and hold it for one to two seconds. Slowly exhales your breath through the mouth. Repeat the steps for some times. You can close your eyes.  

2. Do what makes them happy

Children are sensitive about what happens around them and when it comes to children who suffer from anxiety disorder, the sensitivity increases. Try to do things that make them happy. Children having an anxiety disorder are often distressed. Therefore, ensure that they are not worried all the time. Being worried all the time can make them feel anxious about themselves. By doing things that make them happy, helps them to get out of their anxious thoughts and experience calmness and peace.  Be consistent with how you handle their problems.

Sadness is the persistent symptom of anxiety and trying the take steps that can diminish sadness is an effective way to deal with anger. Doing things that can make them happy can divert their mind for at least some time and add positivity in their lives.

3. Stay calm

Anger is common in people who have anxiety disorders. There is some evidence to suggest that the elevated level of anger is present in individuals who have anxiety disorders. The trait and the state of anger might differ in an adult and a child. In an anxiety disorder, there are chances that your child might behave in the following way, aggression, expressing angry feelings, suppressing angry feelings, and persistent trying to control anger. Many times, he or she might lose control, but you need to stay calm.

Many times, sadness and fear come out in the form of anger. Therefore, staying calm and understanding their situation may make them feel relaxed and at least a bit stress free. On the other hand, reacting to their anger with negative talks may make them feel worthless which can trigger the additional symptoms of anxiety.

4. Make your child feel safe

Anxiety disorder is associated with fear which is nagging which persists over time. It is a fear of something about the future rather than the present. A normal person can never imagine the feeling of fear that a person from anxiety disorder going through. The feeling of fear can be scary in itself, especially when you have no idea why you are experiencing those thoughts or feelings.  

There are plenty of triggers for fear and you cannot work on all of them to avoid them, but you can make your child feel safe. Make him or her feel safe with you. Assure them that you are with them during all the danger. This way will help them to reduce the feeling of fear to some extent. Not only this, it will allow a child to share their thoughts with you.
