6 breastfeeding habits you need to stop right now
I don't agree with them when they say that pregnancy is the hardest time of having a baby. I believe that those early post-delivery days are more tough on the mother. We are sleep deprived, confused, worried and excited- all at the same time. There are so many tabs open in our mind that we end up messing up with our basic responsibilities as a mother. I am sure you have heard of the proverb ‘A little knowledge is a dangerous thing’, which is applicable to this context as well.
1. Stopwatch breastfeeding
If you are one of those mothers who think breast milk is just the same- for once and forever; you need to go through a study by La Leche League International (LLLI). According to it, the composition of breast milk changes through the feeding. It starts off like skim milk, initially satisfying and high in volume; and then changes to more of a whole milk, high in fat and calories. Ultimately, the baby needs both foremilk and hindmilk, which means you have to give them enough time to empty each breast. Some babies are slow in this process which does not mean they do not need all of it. Limiting time at the breast can cause the baby to be underfed it miss out on fatty hind milk. Limiting time for your baby to breastfeed should be avoided, if possible.
2. Setting up a strict schedule to breastfeed
If both the parents are working, then it gets crucial to a have a fix breastfeeding schedule for the baby. If you are doing the same with your baby, then you need to be careful about the same, as unnatural scheduling can really mess things up in your baby’s body. It negatively impact the breastfeeding relationship as you may be restricting the amount baby is getting (by watching the clock during feeds) or missing critical feeding cues (when you spread feeds out to every certain number of hours). It is advised to parent that they consult their doctor as soon as possible, if they feel they are unable to meet their baby’s nutritional needs.
3. Ignoring the baby while breastfeeding
Breastfeeding is nature’s way to strengthen the bond between the mother and the baby. As a mother, you need to make sure to be attentive when you are breastfeeding your baby. Engaging yourself in phone or laptop takes away eye contact from baby, and babies need that much interaction from mother. Though it is not mandatory to completely put your phone away during feeding, especially if your little one is nodding off to sleep. Just be mindful of how much time you spend on it.
4. Pressing your boobs
You need to understand that your boobs are working harder than ever by feeding the baby. Hence, they deserve comfort in every possible way. Wearing tight clothes or pressing them hard may lead into severe pain, clogged ducts and even mastitis.
5. Feeling shy
This one is particularly for new mommies as you girls are more concerned about people around you than other mothers. Initially, feeling shy is a hard habit to drop, but it's necessary for a good feeding session. Breastfeeding is completely natural and generally, people do understand the urgency as well. All you need to do it acknowledge the fact that your baby is hungry and act accordingly. You can try using a breastfeeding cover if you want to feed the baby in public places as metro, bus, etc.
6. Taking random drugs
Many women tend to buy medicines online when they experience perceived supply problems; and that is not the best thing to do when you are breastfeeding your baby. Taking herbs to boost your supply without talking to a lactation consultant first can harm you, your baby, or in the worst case, can tank your supply. Many herbs have side effects and they can cross react with other things you may be taking. If you suspect a supply problem, consult a lactation expert first before self-diagnosing and spending a million bucks on supplements and drugs.
Ladies! If you are practising any one of them; please train yourself to stop that. Also, spread the word among friends and family, so that every baby can breastfeed in the best way.
