3 beautiful stages of pregnancy

The gestation period is the most beautiful and delicate phase of a woman’s life. A typical pregnancy lasts 40 weeks from the first day of your last menstrual period(LMP) to the birth of your baby. It is divided into three stages, called first trimester, second trimester, and third trimester. Conception to about 12th week of pregnancy is generally referred to as first trimester. The second trimester is weeks 13 to 27th whereas the third trimester is counted from 28th week till the end.

First Stage

During the first stage itself, your body undergoes many changes. Change in hormone affects almost every organ system in your body. These changes can trigger some symptoms in the first trimester. One of the clear signs is a pause in your menstruation cycle. Some other changes that you can experience are:

  • Tiredness
  • Tender, Swollen Breasts
  • Upset Stomach
  • Morning Sickness
  • Constipation
  • Mood Swings
  • A headache
  • Heartburn
  • Weight gain or loss

As your body changes, you may need to make some changes in your daily lifestyle like going to bed earlier, eating frequent but small meals

Physical and Emotional Changes: Although, hormonal changes impact every part of the body, some major changes physically and emotionally include cravings or aversion to a certain food, nausea, heartburn etc.

Changes in daily routine: Due to pregnancy, you might have to revise your daily schedule. You should go to bed earlier, eat healthy, small meals frequently. Some women may face discomfort while others may not feel it at all.

The baby at 12 weeks: When your baby is in that phase then,

  • A baby becomes an embryo.
  • The nervous system of the baby begins to develop
  • Heart formation starts
  • Major organs begin to form
  • Sex organs begin to form and start depicting whether it’s a girl or a boy.
  • An umbilical cord is visible
  • The nervous and muscles begin to work together.
  • Eyelids close to protect the developing eyes

Second Stage

Most of the women find this trimester easier as compared to the first one. Still, it is important to be informed about all the complications that might occur. You might notice symptoms like stress, fatigue, nausea are going away. Your abdomen will start expanding with the passing time. You will even feel your baby moving in your tummy. As your baby grows, it makes room in your stomach. During that time, you may have:

  • Body ache
  • Stretch marks on your abdomen, breasts, thighs etc.
  • Darkening around the nipples
  • Numb or tingling hands
  • Swelling of the body parts

The baby at 27 weeks:

During that phase, you will start having a baby bump. Your abdomen will also start growing. Other changes might include:

  • Back, abdomen, groin or thigh will start aching
  • A line running on the skin from belly button to pubic hairline
  • Patches of dark skin, usually over the cheeks, nose or forehead.
  • The musculoskeletal system start forming
  • Skin start developing and is nearly translucent
  • Your baby starts sucking motions with the mouth
  • Your baby is more active
  • Eyebrows, eyelashes, fingernails start growing
  • Your baby can hear and swallow.
  • Baby’s brain bone marrow begins to make red blood cells
  • Footprints and fingerprints begin to form
  • The lungs are formed.
  • If the baby is a boy, his testicles will start descending into the scrotum and if it is a girl, her uterus and ovaries will start getting in place.

Third Stage

Some of the symptoms from the second trimester will continue. Many women might have breathing difficulties. They may have an urge to pee more. Some changes in body include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Heartburn
  • Tender Breasts
  • Your belly button may stick out
  • Trouble sleeping

The baby in the last phase: It is the final stage of the gestation period. Here, you’ll notice more physical as well as mental changes:

  • Swelling of ankles, fingers, and face.
  • Baby moving lower in your abdomen
  • Contractions that can be the sign of true or false labor
  • Movement and kicking increase
  • Fine hair begins to fall off
  • Lungs are fully formed
  • Increase in body fat
  • Your baby is about 16 to 19 inches long
  • In this phase, your baby is considered full term
  • Baby’s organs are capable of functioning on their own
  • As your due date comes closer, the baby may turn into a head-down position for birth.
