Diseases That Are Associated With Sudden Weight Loss
Normally, weight loss results from decreased energy intake and increased energy expenditure. Many times, we experience an unexplained weight loss and often find ourselves confused. Most often, an unexplained weight loss is a warning sign of diseases that we might not be aware of. Weight loss can be classified into two types:
- Voluntary weight loss - Voluntary weight loss in obese people is usually benign, but in people who are not overweight, it indicates psychiatric disease.

Many of us want to lose weight but it should be healthy. Weight loss due to some underlying disease is not healthy. It is dangerous as it can make a person weak and worsen the symptoms of a disease. There are many medical conditions that can cause weight loss and some of them are as follows:
Multiple studies have been conducted to investigate the relationship between the overactive thyroid gland and weight loss. It was observed that there is a close relationship between the two and most of the patients having hyperthyroidism experience sudden weight loss.
Hyperthyroidism, also known as overactive thyroid is a disease which occurs when the thyroid gland produces thyroid hormones in excess. In other words, when the body has thyroid hormones that are more than the required amount, it causes hyperthyroidism. Although thyroid hormones are vital for the normal functioning of various body systems, any variations in the amount of hormones produced that cause harm to the human body.
Thyroid hormones play a vital role in the process of metabolism and studies have stated that there is a relationship between body weight and metabolism. Hyperthyroidism is associated with an increased basal metabolic rate and this is one of the main reason, why people with overactive thyroid experience weight loss. When the thyroid gland becomes overactive, it increases basal metabolic rate. It further leads to an increase in a caloric requirement in order to maintain the weight. When a person does not increase the intake of calories, he or she experiences weight loss.
TYPE 1 DIABETES
Diabetes is a chronic disease which affects millions of people around the world and it is one of the leading cause of death. It is a disease which occurs when the blood sugar level in the body becomes too high and start affecting the organs and parts of the body. Insulin plays an important role in regulating the blood sugar level. Diabetes is mainly categorized into two types:
- Type 1 Diabetes - Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas fails to produce insulin that is sufficient enough for the body to regulate glucose level.
- Type 2 Diabetes - Type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreas produces insulin but it is not sufficient enough or the body fails to use it effectively.
Weight loss is closely associated with Type 1 diabetes. People suffering from type 1 diabetes experience weight loss. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the immune system in the body mistakenly attacks the beta cells in the pancreas and make the pancreas incapable to produce enough insulin. Other than weight loss, type 1 diabetes is associated with other symptoms as well such as frequent urge to urinate, frequent thirst, loss of muscle and skin infection.
INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE
Weight loss is one of the most common symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease. Inflammatory bowel disease is not a single disease, but it includes a group of diseases in which the immune system in the body mistakenly attacks the parts of the digestive system. The two most common types of inflammatory bowel disease are Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative colitis.
- Crohn’s disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease which attacks the lining of the digestive tract.
- Ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease which causes inflammation in the digestive tract.
Lack of appetite, fatigue and weight loss are common in people having inflammatory bowel disease. But the severity of the symptoms can vary greatly for one person to another. For one patient, symptoms can be mild and for the patient, the symptoms can be severe.
Endocarditis is another disorder that is associated with a change in weight and cause sudden weight loss. Endocarditis is a condition which occurs due to an infection of the endocardial surface of the heart. This infection can involve various parts of the heart such as atrial or ventricular septal defects, arteriovenous shunts, and aorta. Endocarditis is caused by the bacteria which enters the bloodstream and settles in the heart.
Endocarditis is a deadly disease and is associated with various complications. It is associated with high mortality rates. Endocarditis is associated with the occurrence of various symptoms such as weight loss, anorexia, night sweat, fever, and chills. Many patients having endocarditis complains of losing weight.
