Smoking is the greatest cause of so many premature deaths as it contains many poisonous chemicals that kill people every day. This poison not only causes diseases but also disrupts the way body heal itself. The more you smoke, the more you hurt your body. There are many diseases that are directly associated with the cigarette smoking and some of them include:
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a long term breathing disorder that is characterized by the shortness of breath and cough with the mucus. It is a progressive disease that worsens over time. COPD is a growing cause of disabilities and premature deaths. There are many pieces of evidence that prove that smoking is the major cause of COPD. It has been believed that all the cigarette smokers have some inflammation in their lungs and airways. Smoke contains many chemicals and the concentration of oxidants are very high in each puff. These oxidant substances induce the inflammation in the lungs and its airways. This continuous cycle of inflammation leads to an increased production of the mucus and it further causes a chronic cough and wheezing, which are the symptoms of COPD.
2. Type 2 Diabetes
Evidence strongly suggests that inflammation and oxidative stress are highly associated with an increased risk of diabetes. Diabetes is a condition which is characterized by the high sugar level of the body. A person is said to be diabetic when the sugar level of the body is abnormally high. Smoking causes insulin resistance and this means that the body requires more insulin to normalize the sugar level. In non-diabetic smokers the insulin producing cells, that are present in the pancreas produces more insulin to normalize the sugar level, this increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. If you have diabetes then smoking can put your health in even greater damage. Smoking damages the blood vessels and increases the risk of infections. Also, the smoker who have diabetes are three times more likely to die from heart disease than those who do not smoke.
According to the researchers, one of every three cancer deaths in the United States is due to smoking. Cigarette smoking contains many chemicals and most of them are known to be the cause of cancer. Cancer is a condition when the cells start to grow uncontrollably. Each cigarette puff delivers chemicals to the lungs which get absorbed in the bloodstream and carried to every organ of the body. When these chemicals spread throughout the body, it damages the DNA which leads the cells to grow uncontrollably. Lung Cancer is the most common type of cancer and in most of the cases, smoking is considered as a sole cause of the lung cancer. Not only lung cancer, cigarette smoking is responsible for other cancers as well but lung cancer is the commonest one.
4. Aortic aneurysm
An aortic aneurysm is a condition of an enlargement of the aorta, which is the main artery of the human body that originates from the left ventricle of the heart to the abdomen. Studies establish that smoking is one of the most important factors associated with the development of an aortic aneurysm as it affects the elastic degradation. Also, nicotine is one of the most harmful chemicals that is present the cigarette smoking and the development of an aortic aneurysm can be the result of nicotine induced neutrophil elastase activity. Smoking weakens the walls of the aorta and damages it.
5. Crohn’s Disease
Smoking highly increases the risk of Crohn’s disease and can also make it worse by increasing the severity of this disease. It is a chronic inflammatory disease that can affect any part of the body from the mouth to the anus. Nicotine which is one of the most harmful chemicals of cigarette smoking is said to play the most important role in the development of Crohn’s disease. It acts as an immunosuppressant for the blood vessels that attacks the bacterias and leads to the failure in killing harmful bacterias. Also, many researchers believed that people who suffer from Crohn's disease are more likely to have mothers who had smoked during the pregnancy period or these people have been exposed to smoking at home since childhood.
Psoriasis is a long lasting autoimmune skin disease and psychological factors such as smoking is considered to be one of the causes of psoriasis. Many researchers believe that nicotine is the culprit that alters the immune system and affects the cells of the skin. It also leads to an inflammation of the skin. Psoriasis causes skin patches that are characterized as red and itchy.
Smoking is considered as the greatest reason for so many deaths and it is extremely vital to understand the need of quitting it.
