According to research, every day a large number of people visit doctors for different health conditions. There are multiple diseases which has become very common and has very high prevalence. Here is the list of some of the health conditions:
1. Diabetes mellitus
Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common metabolic disorders whose prevalence is increasing at a rapid rate. In the United States, a large number of people are suffering from diabetes mellitus and according to researchers, a large number of people throughout the world die from this disease.
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disorder that is characterized by hyperglycemia, which occurs due to the disturbances in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fat, and protein and these disturbances can result from the defect in insulin secretion, insulin action or both. In general terms, Diabetes mellitus is a condition in which the glucose level in the blood becomes too high than the normal level. In the human body, the pancreas produces insulin which is an important hormone to regulate the glucose level in the blood. When the pancreas fails to produce a sufficient amount of insulin or when the body fails to use produced insulin, diabetes mellitus occurs.
Diabetes mellitus is associated with a wide range of symptoms and some of the symptoms include, needing to urinate frequently, increased thirst, unexplained weight loss, change in vision, increase in hunger, increase in the number of infections and sores that take time to heal.
2. Alzheimer’s disease
Alzheimer’s disease is another common disease whose prevalence is high and in fact, it is one of the leading cause of death in the United States. Alzheimer’s disease affects millions of people throughout the world. Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder which is characterized by problems with the memory, thinking, and behavior. Alzheimer is one of the types of Dementia. Dementia is a brain disorder that is characterized by a loss of cognitive function to such an extreme that it starts causing problems in doing everyday tasks.
Alzheimer’s disease is categorized into two - familial and sporadic.
Familial Alzheimer's disease is a disease which occurs due to genetics, means that the disease is transmitted from one generation to another. It is very rare and approximately only 5% of all cases of Alzheimer's disease belong to the category of familial Alzheimer's disease.
Sporadic Alzheimer's disease is a disease which occurs due to various risk factors, except genetic. Most of the cases of Alzheimer's disease belong to the category of sporadic Alzheimer's disease.
Some of the symptoms that are associated with Alzheimer's disease are as follows:
- Memory loss
- Problems with language
- Impaired judgement
- Change in mood and behavior
- Increased confusion
- Problems with concentration
- Change in personality
3. Coronary artery disease
Coronary heart disease is considered to be the most common cause of morbidity as well as mortality throughout the world. Coronary artery disease, also known as ischemic heart disease is a disease which occurs when the coronary arteries become narrowed. Coronary arteries play an important role in supplying oxygen rich blood to the heart. Coronary artery disease is characterized by the buildup of plaque inside the coronary arteries. Plaque is a substance that is found in the blood and this plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol and other substances.
The buildup of plaque makes it difficult for the heart to pump effectively. The buildup of plaque can lead to partial or complete loss of supply of blood to the heart. When there is a partial loss of supply, it causes angina and when there is a complete loss of supply, it causes a heart attack.
Sometimes, the plaque builds up in the walls of arteries, this condition is known as atherosclerosis. This decreases the flow of blood to the arteries. Some people having coronary artery disease may have no symptom, whereas on the other hand, some people may have some symptoms such as sweating. lightheadedness, indigestion, shortness of breath and nausea.
4. Lung cancer
Yes, lung cancer is one of the common diseases. Cancer itself is a life-threatening condition and these days the number of diagnosed cases of lung cancer is increasing. The lungs are the main organs of breathing and lung cancer is a type of cancer in which a tumor grows in an uncontrolled way in one or both lungs. Primarily, lung cancer is of two types - small cell lung cancer and non small cell lung cancer.
Small cell lung cancer is a type of lung cancer which begins in the middle of the lungs and this type of lung cancer spreads easily.
Non small cell lung cancer is a type of cancer which can begin from anywhere in the lungs. It begins in the healthy cells and starts to grow uncontrollably in order to form tumor.
Lung cancer is associated with various symptoms and some of the symptoms include, persistent cough, weight loss, shortness of breath, and extreme tiredness. There are various risk factors for lung cancer, but cigarette smoking is considered to be the most common cause of lung cancer. Most of the patients having lung cancer are smokers. Second hand smoke also causes lung cancer.
