How potatoes and other food items result into miscarriage?

Pregnancy is undoubtedly one of the most special phases of a couple’s life, especially the mother as she can feel the baby growing inside her and witness all its pros and cons on the body. This makes the mother more worried and concerned for the food she’s taking in her body. They are usually confused about what to eat and what not to, leading them to a vicious circle of searching it  online, consulting dietician, asking friends and what not.

Even after doing all this, there is a 13.5%  chances of a miscarriage after 6 week of conceiving. In addition to proper medication, checkups and exercises, keeping a check on your food intakes in equally crucial for having a successful birth. There are a long list of food items which can result into a miscarriage as they cause internal contractions and cervix dilation leading to a miscarriage. We have come up with a list of top 5 among them as follows-

1. Aloe-Vera

We all run to Aloe-Vera for its magical healing ability and is used all over the world for cuts and grazes, acne, and rashes. It is also used as a powerful laxative agent and to prevent heartburn, indigestion and stomach ulcers.It is not something you would naturally think to avoid during pregnancy. However, Aloe Vera juice is highly dangerous to pregnant women as it contributes to uterine contractions which can result in early pregnancy loss. Consumption of Aloe Vera juice during pregnancy lowers blood glucose levels which can be potentially dangerous to Mum and baby.

2. Potatoes

Potatoes which have started sprouting and have gone green are a risk to everyone, not just pregnant women, as they contain toxins which are potentially harmful. The toxins known as alpha-solanine and alpha-chaconine are linked to spina bifida, hydrocephalus and other developmental issues in the fetus' of pregnant women and can result in miscarriage.

They say that it is possible to cut the sprouts off and eat the potato once it is not wrinkled and soft but better safe than sorry and just throw them away. There is no point in risking your baby's health over a few potatoes. Buy fresh potatoes and store them in a dark, cool place to ensure they last longer. If they are kept in a warm area, they will sprout quicker causing the harmful toxins.

3. Fresh Juice

Pregnant women should try to avoid unpasteurized food in every condition. It includes  unwashed fruit and vegetables, cooked deli meats, unpasteurized dairy products and smoked seafoods. In fact, freshly squeezed orange juice is at risk of harboring the bacteria as it is unpasteurized juice. It may contain harmful bacteria from the raw fruit used to make the juice leading to food poisoning. The reason we must keep our distance from such foods is due to the fact that they are prone to harbour the bacteria, listeria, which is threatening to a fetus. Listeria causes Listeriosis which is an infection. It may not cause obvious symptoms for a pregnant woman, but may cause a serious infection in the fetus leading to miscarriage or stillbirth. It can also cause preterm delivery and life-threatening fetal infections.

4. Herbal Tea

More often than not, pregnant women believe that because herbal teas do not contain any caffeine they are a good substitute for tea or coffee in pregnancy. However, herbal teas and natural supplements contain a variety of ingredients which could be potentially harmful to the fetus. There are many herbal teas that can cause uterine contractions in a pregnant woman, resulting in miscarriage or fetal stress.According to the American Pregnancy Association, the majority of commercially available herbal teas are safe for pregnant women however non-commercial varieties, which are not monitored and may contain harmful amounts of specific herbs, are not safe. so , make sure you buy pregnancy herbs only from a reputed online pharmacy.

5. Papaya

Papaya is one of the dangerous miscarriage-inducing food items. Green or unripe papaya contains enzymes that can lead to uterine contractions, leading to a miscarriage. That's why a pregnant woman should avoid consuming green papaya, especially during first trimester of pregnancy. Avoid eating it in every form, including  salad or in the dishes made out of it.
