Mama's Guide:10 things to never do while on periods
I am totally with you when you say that periods are hard and your body acts differently during menstruation. And this is the reason we girls have a love-hate relationship with our periods. When you're on your period, there are a number of activities you definitely don't feel like doing because of how your how your body feels. There are also a number of things you should never do on your period, not just because they don't feel great, but because they could also harm your health or make you feel even worse. That time of the month is already a bummer as it is, so there is no point making it harder on self.
To my surprise, there are a lot of females in their late 20s or early 30s, who still struggle with managing periods. If you are one of them, I’ve compiled a list of 10 things my mother told me not to do when I was a teenager.
1. Go for waxing appointment
Mark my words, it will be a lot harder to get your body waxed while you are on your periods due to a lower level of estrogen. Your pain receptors are extra heightened and your skin extra sensitive when you have your period. Add to that a pretty messy situation and waxing while on your period is not something you should do.
2. Have a lot of dairy products
Calcium is great for helping with menstrual pains, but milk products do the opposite. Milk, cheese, and yogurt should be eaten sparingly or not at all while we have our period because they contain arachidonic acids and can cause cramps. Instead, reach for a glass of almond milk and make delicious smoothies using non-dairy coconut milk yogurts. You will get your calcium this way, plus the healthy benefits from the fruits and berries you add to your smoothies.
3. Skip gym
I totally get your back girl! I agree the cramping is so awful that all we want to do is stay curled up in bed, watch television, and keep our mouth filled with junk. But that is not the best approach to periods. In fact, we should be hitting the gym during our period as exercise will help relieve cramping and other bodily aches when we are bleeding. Strange but true!
4. Munch salty junk
Do not hate me for this but yes, salty foods make us bloat, especially when we have our menses. That means we will feel even lousier during our period. Instead, we should snack on the healthy stuff, like fruits and vegetables, to supply our bodies with much needed minerals and vitamins during this time.
5. Be mean to others
Being mean to other people is never cool, even if you are on your period. If you are feeling crabby while aunt flow is visiting you, one of the best things you can do is tell your family or your partner that you need a bit of space right now.Spend some time checking out ways you can improve yourself, your health, and your lifestyle. In fact, having your period is the best excuse available to spend time thinking about your life and how you can make things better, not worse.
6. Using the same protection whole day
It's easy to get caught up in your everyday activities, but don't leave the same pad or tampon in all day. You should be changing your tampon/pad every 3 to 4 hours to avoid an unpleasant odor, bacterial buildup — which can lead to infections — as well as the dreaded bleeding through your pants. Keep an extra supply of pads and tampons in your purse so you can take the time to change while at work. If you are too tired to go to a pharmacy, you can go to an online medical store to buy them.
7. Sleeping without protection
It might be tempting to ditch those pads after a long day of irritation, but it will also be messy. Going to bed without a pad or tampon at night will create a mess, stain your sheets, comforter, and ruin your mattress. If you find traditional pads and tampons uncomfortable at night, look into alternatives. There are cloth pads you can make yourself or buy online, as well as period panties or the menstrual cup. Any of these alternatives are comfortable for nighttime sleeping and even regular daytime use.
8. Vaginal Douching
Douching is never necessary and can sometimes be harmful. The fragranced solution can disrupt the normal vaginal flora, causing irritation and/or abnormal discharge. A simple water douche (meaning only water, nothing else) is a reasonable alternative, but not medically necessary.
9. Going over with caffeine or tobacco
There's nothing like a morning cup of coffee, but if it's that time of the month, you might want to temporarily skip your latte. Caffeine can worsen discomfort from cramps and bloating, as it constricts blood vessels, which can worsen menstrual cramps, according to Livestrong. We all know by now that smoking is bad for you, but in addition to its health risks, it can also make your period much worse. A study from the journal Tobacco Control found that smokers are more likely to have painful periods than non-smokers.
10. Having unprotected sex
While unprotected sex is never a good idea, it is a particularly a bad idea when you have your period, blood is a good medium for viruses and other bugs. Therefore the transmission of things like HIV can be higher during this time period. Furthermore, the cervix is slightly open when you have your period, which makes it easier for bugs to get from the vagina to the cervix and into the pelvis. Plus, you're not protected from pregnancy just because you're menstruating. For women with more irregular periods, ovulation and bleeding can happen at the same time, meaning you can get pregnant if you have unprotected sex.
Hope you find it helpful. Share it with your girlfriends and tell them what not to do during periods.
