Meditation Definition


Meditation is a habitual process in order to train your mind and increase your ability to focus and redirect your thoughts. Since meditation is about to practise, the popularity of it increases as people get to know about its benefits.


It also helps you to increase your awareness of yourself and your surroundings. In other words, it also helps a person to reduce stress and enhances concentration.

Mindfulness meditation


It is a psychological process of bringing a person’s attention to experience things that are occurring in the present without judging or any other thought. A person just has to be present and which can only be achieved through practice.


Mindfulness meditation arose from Buddhist teachings which are the most common meditation technique practised in the West. The basic fundamental task is to be aware of the thoughts that pass through your mind without getting involved in them.


Being aware means, you have to observe and take note of the patterns and consequences of those thoughts on you. Such type of meditation involves a combination of concentration and awareness.


Regular practice of mindfulness meditation is beneficial for your both mental and physical health. It also plays a vital role in managing issues, such as anxiety, stress, depression, sleep disorder, relationship issues or an eating disorder.


Being regular in practising such meditation doesn’t mean a person has to meditate every day. Studies suggest that meditating three to four times per week can be beneficial. According to the neuroimaging studies, regular practising mindfulness meditation for eight weeks will alter the brain.


Spiritual meditation


It is a type of meditation that connects a person to the real self deeply, stripping off all the perceptions the person has about himself. It is mainly practised in Eastern religions, like Hinduism, Daoism, and Christian faith.


It is like a prayer that you reflect on the silence around you that helps you to seek a deep connection with your God or Universe. It also helps in realizing the eternal truth and gives you the power to let go of things that had happened and the coming events.


When it comes to spiritual meditation, it is essential for you to choose a particular place and position that you will be comfortable with. This means avoid noises as much as possible surrounded by greenery and the gentle chirping of the birds.


Try to sit in the Vajrasana, Padmasana, or the Sukhasana position. You may also arrange yourself by sitting on a chair, or with your back at rest, or in a stand-up position with your back leaning against the walls.

Focused Meditation


This type of meditation is a widespread style of Buddhist practice that involves sustaining attention in some particular moments on something internal, such as breath or external influences, such as the sound of a metronome to help focus tour attention.


The practice seems to be simple in theory, but it can be difficult for beginners to hold their focus on a particular thing for a long time. During such meditation, the person continuously monitors the quality of their attention for holding the anchor.


Such type of meditation is best for the people who require additional attention in their life. During the initial stages, you may feel more distracted, and with more practice, you will be able to hold focus progressively effortlessly.


Movement Meditation


According to the name of this type of meditation, most people think of yoga, but that’s not true, my friend. Movement meditation originated in Buddhism and can be used as mindfulness practice as it helps a person to enhance awareness of the surroundings, body, and thoughts.


Some people are vigorous and restless enough that they can’t sit and practice meditation. Hence, moving meditation is a productive alternative for people falling in this category. Some people or people living in monasteries and retreats, practice both moving and sitting medications alternatively.


This type of meditation includes practising walking through the woods, gardening, qigong, and other gentle forms of motion. It is that active form of medication where your movement will guide you. It is considered best for people who find peace in action and prefer to keep wandering things.


Mantra Meditation


Mantra meditation involves speaking, chatting, whispering or repeating a mantra in mind. Usually, mantra meditation involves two essential components, like meditation mindfulness and mantra recitation. This was originated from Buddhist and Hindu roots, and now it is gaining popularity as a part of non-secular mindfulness practice.


Mantra meditation is practised for various reasons, such as to protect your mind from unwanted distractions or emotions, to deal with sleeplessness or to deal with fears linked with travelling.


Here are some points that will guide you to practise the meditation ideally:-


  • Choose the best mantra that suits your intention.
  • Try to be comfortable and always remember your intention.
  • Sitting plays an important role, hence sit correctly and focus on your breath.
  • Recite your mantra


After following these basic steps, another question arises: What's the best mantra for meditation?


Such meditation is a form of mindfulness practice where the recitation of the mantra settles your mind. Therefore, choosing a mantra is very important. It is not necessary to recite a particular type of mantra, you are free to choose any mantra according to your convenience. Like some people decide to choose positive affirmations. 


Short affirmations are considered best, such as:-


  • I am content at this moment
  • I will follow my heart 
  • My treasures lie within.


The possibilities of having a mantra are endless. Therefore you are free to choose a mantra according to your wish.


Transcendental meditation


Transcendental meditation is a type of silent mantra meditation developed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi which is practised twice a day for twenty minutes. It is so much a popular form of meditation around the world that it is being scientifically studied and is much more customised than mantra meditation.


Such type of meditation is given so much importance just because of some meditation benefits associated with it, such as it helps a person to reduce chronic pain, anxiety, high blood pressure, cholesterol, and the use of health care services.


Transcendental meditation is not that simple as other forms of meditations, it involves a seven-step course of instructions from a certified teacher. 


The teacher first explains the technique and its effects during the 60 minutes of an introductory lecture, followed by 45 minutes of more specific information about it. Then comes the interview of 10-15 minutes with a further personal instruction of 1-2 hours.

At the end of the ceremony, the person will be given a mantra by the teacher, which is supposed to remain confidential.
