Protect Your Vision With These Simple Tips

Eyes are one of the most important parts of the body that helps you see the world. It is important to take care of it. There are many ways through which you can help your eyes stay healthy and you can do it by bringing some changes in your daily routine.

1. Eat right food

What we eat plays an important role in maintaining the health of eyes and it also protects the vision. There are many things that we can do to keep eyes healthy and eating right food is the easiest and an effective way to do it. According to many studies, antioxidants, lutein and zeaxanthin and omega three fatty acids are the group of three essential nutrients that play a key role in keeping eyes healthy.

  • Antioxidants are nutrients that include Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and beta-carotene. These nutrients defend the body against the damage from free radicals. Free radicals circulate in the body and damages healthy cells of the body. Antioxidants protect the cells, including the cells of the eyes. Fruits and vegetables are good sources of antioxidants.
  • Lutein and zeaxanthin are the two natural pigments that give color to green leafy vegetables. They do a great job in keeping the eyes healthy. They do this by acting as an antioxidant and protects the cells of the eyes from free radicals and it also acts as an internal sunglasses that protect the eyes from UV radiations. Spinach, collard green, dark green vegetables are some of the good sources of getting lutein and zeaxanthin.
  • Omega 3 fatty acids help in protecting the eyes by treating the damaged cells and leading the retina to work normally. It also reduces inflammation and prevents the eyes from leaky blood vessels. Salmon, flax seeds and nuts are some of the sources to obtain omega 3 fatty acids.

2. Quit Smoking

Smoking is linked to many adverse health problems and the eye is one such part of the body that is affected by it. In fact, smoking can be the leading cause of many eye diseases such as

  • Cataracts - Cataract is an eye problem that causes the variety of vision problem and it is a condition of clouding of the lens in the eyes. It creates problems such as difficulty in seeing colors, blurred vision, loss of contrast, and trouble seeing at night. Also, cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world. People who smoke are at increased risk of developing cataracts.
  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) - Many studies have shown that people who smoke are more likely to suffer from age related macular degeneration than those who have never smoked. It affects the center of the retina, which plays important role in the vision. AMD is of two types, dry AMD and wet AMD. Dry AMD leads to the thinning of the retina and wet AMD grows blood vessels in the retina and damages the macula.
  • Diabetic retinopathy - It is another disease that can be developed due to cigarette smoking. It is an eye disease that damages the blood vessels in the retina and generally, it has no early warning signs and can lead to rapid vision loss.
  • Uveitis - Uveitis is a serious eye disease that can cause complete vision loss and smokers are more likely to have uveitis as compared to non smokers. It is an inflammation of the eye’s middle layer.

3. Give rest to your eyes

Continuous strain on our eyes can make them dry and tired and it can affect the health of the eyes. We use our eyes every day to handle different series of work such as reading, operating computers, watching television and playing video games. All these activities put the strain on the eyes and create eyes problems. It can easily be understood with an example, you often experience blurred vision after continuously looking at a particular object. This is because the ciliary muscle of the eyes becomes too tired. Similarly, if you look at the computer screen for a long time you are making them tired. It is essential to give rest to the eyes and avoid the risk of dry eyes. You can try 20-20-20 rule to avoid strain on eyes. After every 20 minutes look away from the screen for 20 seconds. This will help you reduce eye strain.

4. Get your eyes checked

Visiting your eye care professional for the comprehensive eye care dilated exam every year. There are chances that you might think that your eyes are healthy and your vision is also fine but getting it checked is important to avoid any risk. You might not feel that you require glasses but glasses can help you see better and more clearly. Regular eye tests are also important because generally at initial stages, your eyes don’t hurt when something is wrong. Don’t take chance with your eyesight.
