We all know that water performs many vital functions in the human body. It is the major constituent of the human body. Water is vital for the survival of human beings as it is the main constituent of the cells, tissues, and organs. Water is important for various body functions and in order to have a sufficient water in the body, we need to pay attention to what we drink throughout the day to ensure that we are fulfilling the need of water in the body.
When the human body does not have enough water, it results in a disease known as dehydration. The severity of dehydration can vary from person to person as for one person it can be mild and for the other, it can be serious. But untreated dehydration is always a problem. It can be life-threatening. Dehydration is accompanied by symptoms like a headache, muscle cramps, reduced urine output, dry mouth, and lightheadedness. There are three types of dehydration:
1. Isotonic dehydration - It means that the salt is lost isotonically from the gastrointestinal tract such as diarrhea.
2. Hypertonic dehydration - It means that inadequate water intake and excessive water loss are responsible for the development of hydration.
3. Hypotonic dehydration - It occurs when the loss of gastrointestinal fluid is replaced by the water.
There are various medical conditions that can occur due to dehydration and some of them are as follows:
Kidneys perform important functions in the body and any impairment to these organs severely affects the individual. Kidney disease occurs when the kidneys are damaged and do not work normally. The primary function of kidneys is to clean the blood by removing all the excess fluid, and waste products. Kidney failure is considered to be the end stage of kidney disease. It is also known as renal failure. Kidney failure occurs when the kidneys completely fail to remove waste and keep an individual happy. Dehydration can lead to the buildup of waste in the body and affect the working of the kidneys. Water plays an important role in removing waste from the blood in the form of urine.
Kidney failure can affect the health of an individual in many ways and it is accompanied by many other health problems as well such as loss of appetite, fatigue and leg cramps. Also, kidneys are responsible for making hormones and balance the minerals in the blood. When the working of kidneys are affected, it increases the risk of developing diseases that are associated with bones, nerve and skin. It also causes sleep disorders, weak bones and mental disorders.

Urinary tract infections
Urinary tract infections are common and are responsible for millions of doctor visit each year. Urinary tract infections are the infections of the urinary tract and it occurs when the bacteria get into the urinary tract and multiply, accompanied by redness, swelling, and pain the urinary tract. Urinary tract infection is associated with a wide range of symptoms and some of them include:
- An urgent need to urinate but only a few drops of urine to pass.
- Burning sensation while urinating
Water is an important component that prevents the development of infection in the body and hence when the body lacks water, the risk of developing urinary tract infection increases. Most of the urinary tract infection occurs due to the bacteria, known as E.coli. Normally, bacterias live in the intestine but sometimes they get into the urinary tract and causes infection.
Dry eye is one of the most common complications of dehydration that have a high impact on the quality of life as it is associated with visual discomfort and visual disability. Lack of water in the body leads to insufficient tears in order to nourish the eyes. When the eyes are not nourished properly, it causes dryness. Dry eye is a condition which occurs when the eyes do not produce tears properly or when the tears that are produced evaporates quickly. Dry eyes are basically characterized by dryness and damage to the ocular surface. Dry eyes can cause inflammation of the surface of the eyes. Dry eyes can be serious and if it is left untreated, it can lead to pain, ulcers, and loss of vision.
There are some pieces of evidence that suggest that dehydration is correlated with mood disorders. Dehydration not only affects people physically but also psychologically. When there is a lack of water in the body, the chances of suffering from mood disorders increases to a high extent. Anxiety is the most common problem that can be accompanied by dehydration. Anxiety is defined as a feeling of worry and nervousness. People who dehydrated are more likely to be nervous and stressed. They get stressed out even at small talks or conditions. Also, dehydration often results in mood swings. People often experience a quick change in their mood.
