Routine Food That Is Killing You
While most people tend to eat something because they’re ‘bored’ or to satisfy their midnight cravings, it’s important to keep a track to what type of food you’re consuming on a regular basis. Just because everyone eats it, doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s healthy to consume. There are certain foods that we consume regularly but they aren’t as healthy as they’re considered to be. Although it may not be possible to avoid eating these foods, reducing the amount may prove to be a healthy choice in the long term.
Here is a list of routine food that might be ‘killing you’ - or cause you some serious health problems if you’re consuming them regularly:
Sugar is highly addictive. Apart from raising the glucose levels in the blood, it also leads to obesity and cardiovascular diseases. Avoiding sugar can help in decreasing the risk of diabetes, cancer, obesity, and heart disease.
Consuming too much sugar can have many negative effects on health including high blood pressure and increased chronic inflammation in the body. The artificially added sugar has no nutritional value and is a poor source of energy because the body digests it very quickly. This makes the person consume more of it which causes severe health problems over time. Consuming natural sugar is much better for health and can have some health benefits as well.
2. Vegetable oil
It’s not as healthy as the name suggests. Vegetable oils contain some dangerous trans-fats that can become the cause of cardiovascular disease, obesity, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease. Common vegetable oils include soybean oil, sunflower oil, olive, and coconut oil. Vegetable oil is responsible for causing many mental health problems as it replaces omega-3 fatty acids with Omega-6 acids.
Though a moderate intake of vegetable oil is considered safe, too much of it can lead to higher risks of heart diseases due to the presence of omega-6 fats.
The polyunsaturated fats make the cell membrane more sensitive to oxidation and also react with oxygen in the atmosphere and start deteriorating.
3. White bread
White bread is made from refined flours and contains only the simple carbohydrates. These simple carbohydrates break down into units of sugar which in turn cause the sugar levels to spike soon after eating. A high intake of simple carbohydrates can lead to obesity, and a higher risk of suffering from diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic health conditions.
White bread is stripped of all the nutritional fiber, minerals, and vitamins, which are all essential to the health for keeping the digestive system functioning properly. Refined grains can possibly contribute to the development of the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Refined carbohydrates in white bread can cause a rapid glycemic response which ultimately ends up with having increased fat storage and more hunger and cravings.
4. Fast Food
It’s hard to deny the fact that it tastes good, but the question is whether you’re doing a favor to your health or not? Fast food is generally packed with a load of carbohydrate and consuming too much of it increases the chances of having type-2 diabetes. They’re quite low in nutritional value as they’re full of empty calories. The fat used for preparing most of the fast foods is trans fat, which is the most unhealthy type of fat for human consumption.
Another common side effect of eating fast food is obesity because of high amounts of sugar, calories, and fats. Fast food hinders the healthy growth and development of the body due to deficiency of nutrients and vitamins. The best choice is to forget the delicious taste it sprinkles on your tongue, and accept the fact that there’s truly no substitute for healthy food and a healthy diet.
While salt is considered an essential food ingredient, high intake of it can lead to high blood pressure and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. It’s not possible to cut salt from the diet but limiting the amount can do a favor to your health. Consuming over 6 grams of salt per day can lead to serious health issues.
Salt affects everyone differently and may not lead to any health issue because of high or low salt intake. If the person is salt-sensitive or faces high blood pressure often, then a low-salt diet is preferred to balance the sodium levels in the body. Moderate sodium intake along with a healthy diet is the best choice for keeping a healthy lifestyle.
It might be delicious to drink but drinking soda is near to useless because of no nutritional benefits derived from it. It’s mostly made up of filtered water and refined sugars. Consumption of soda has been linked to obesity, kidney damage, and even certain cancers.
It contains high caffeine content which can cause restlessness, insomnia, and irritability in some people. While it’s hard for some people to break the habit of drinking sodas, there’s no count to the side effects it has on health. Aspartame - the artificial sweetener used in drinks is 200 times sweeter than table sugar and is considered one of the most dangerous substances added to the food.
