  • The harmful bacteria feeds on sugar and damages your oral health. By reducing your sugar intake, you may reduce the number of bacteria in your mouth. If you cannot resist from eating sugary foods, try to keep it to mealtimes and do not brush immediately after.

8. Drink more water:

Water, so far is the best beverage for your overall health, including oral health. Water is recommended after every meal and this may help you wash out some of the negative effects of sticky and acidic foods and beverages in between brushes.

 

9. Eat crunchy vegetables and fruits:

Ready-to-eat foods are healthy and convenient, but perhaps not so good for your oral hygiene. It's recommended for parents to get their kids on harder-to-eat and chew foods at a younger age so that they maintain proper dental care. Hence, try to avoid the overly mushy processed food to maintain oral hygiene, stop cutting the fruits into tiny bits and pieces, and get those jaws working while eating.

 

10. Limit sugary and acidic foods:

Ultimately, sugar when chewed converts into acid in the mouth, which may then erode the enamel of your teeth. These acids are the ones that lead to cavities. Acidic fruits, coffee and tea can wear down your tooth enamel. While you don’t have to completely avoid such foods altogether, it doesn’t hurt to be mindful.

 

11. See your dentist at least twice in a year:

Your own everyday habits play an important role in maintaining your overall oral health. Still, even the most dutiful flossers and brushers need to see a dentist regularly. At minimum, you must see your dentist for cleanings and check-ups at least twice a year. Not only can a dentist remove the calculus and look for cavities, but they would even be able to spot potential problems and issues and offer treatment solutions. Hence, you must visit your dentist regularly.

  • The body naturally builds up the plaque and calculus in the mouth and if it's not removed on time, it embeds underneath the gum tissues and quietly causes periodontal disease. The process doesn't hurt but it silently produces certain enzymes that dissolve away the bones.
  • A little cavity may be managed with a simple filling. A big cavity is a bigger problem. In its biggest stage, it can cause suffering and swelling but even involves loss of a tooth.
